The memorial garden at St John’s was established in 1971 and renovated and rededicated by the Archbishop of Melbourne in 2009. The garden is located on the north side of the church adjacent to Toorak Road.
Cremated remains (ashes) may be interred in the garden by arrangement with the parish office. The service of interment is brief, and is conducted by the clergy. A single fee of $150 applies to assist the parish with upkeep and maintenance of the garden.
A church memorial garden is quite different to secular places of burial and interment such as cemeteries and memorial parks. There are no permanent memorials and the place where the remains are interred is not marked or identified in any way. The whole of the garden is considered to be the place of burial.
See the Book of Memory page for details of the memorial book kept inside the church and to which the names of those interred in the garden may be added.
